Yesterday, Volkswagen revealed the up! GTI for Europe – the third and smallest GTI model ever.
For those who don’t know, the ‘Up!’ is VW’s compact hatch & city runabout and Volkswagen have given it the GTI treatment. Under the bonnet, the Up! GTI has a 1.0L turbo 3-cylinder producing 85kW and 230Nm. That isn’t very much (not much more than a Polo 81TSI), but thanks to its 997kg weight it can get to 100km/h in 8.8 seconds and a V-max (max velocity) of 197km/h. In the video released yesterday, VW compared it to the MK1 Golf GTI (it has 4kW more and weighs just 200kg more).
Cosmetics wise, it comes with the usual GTI features, including cloth tartan seats, red lines on the grilles and around the car, 17-inch rims, a front splitter and a rear wing. Further, the Up! GTI comes with 15mm lower and stiffer suspension and is available exclusively with a 6-speed manual.
The Up! GTI is due to release in Europe in early 2018, with a concept debuting later this month. It is unknown whether it will come to Australia – I sure hope it does. What do you think of the new Up! GTI? I love it – let me know down below!
